The Sheep Keeping Course is the perfect introduction the sheep husbandry and handling. The course is comprised of seminars and practical sessions. The seminars cover the yearly sheep calendar, sheep stratification systems and production systems found in the UK.

Moving and handling sheep.

Learn how to move sheep from the fields into the race using both man power and sheep dogs. The session will cover the basic sheep dogs commands for both Huntaways and Collies.

When in the pens you will be taught how to move sheep through a race, sort using a shedding gate and practice the art of tipping sheep.

Health assessment and young stock management.

Learn how to assess the health of the sheep by learning how to body condition score, assess feet for causes of lameness, examine testicles and teats for breeding soundness, ageing, and recognise signs of common parasites.

In addition to learning about the ewes and tups there will be an opportunity to practice essential lambing skill such as tagging, banding tails, and castration on purpose built models.

Lambing practical

The lambing simulator, like those used in vets schools across the UK, has been purpose build to allow course attendees to practice lambing in a stress free environment. The will be the opportunity to lean how to correct malpresentation and get a feel for what lambing is all about!

And… If you come and visit during the lambing season attendees are welcome help lamb ewes should the opportunity arise.
